"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)The modern world is saturated with competition, everyone chasing something new, flashy, and attention-grabbing, from the latest technology to the most fashionable clothing and vehicles. What stands out most easily is what shines brightest and catches the eye. There is a fitting parallel in creation itself. Stars scattered across the night sky are so bright and visible that they cannot be hidden, and their light brings comfort and beauty to weary souls who gaze upward. In the first century, God established the faith movement called Christianity (Acts 11:26), and Scripture describes believers using this same imagery, calling them the light of the world (Matthew 5:14-16). Just as stars illuminate the darkness of night, Christians are meant to illuminate a world in need of hope, truth, and genuine goodness.
As Christ's ambassadors, believers are meant to be visible and attractive, not through worldly flashiness but through the authentic light of good deeds, love, and integrity. No one enjoys remaining in darkness, and people are instinctively drawn toward genuine light when they encounter it. Unbelievers should find themselves eager to know more about Christianity because of what they observe in the lives of Christians around them. A star that refuses to shine contradicts its very nature, and the same is true for a believer who hides their light. If Christians live on fire for Christ, radiating genuine faith and good works, the church itself will glow brightly and draw others toward God. You are a star. Shine, and make Christianity attractive through the authentic light of your life.
Lord, let my life shine as a genuine light in this dark world. Help my good deeds and my character to reflect Your glory so clearly that others are drawn to know You. Do not let me hide the light You have placed within me. Amen.
