Are We Really New Creations?

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come."

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)

To be in Christ means the old self is done away with and a new self is put on. So the question is simple: are we in Christ? On the surface most of us would say yes. If we can say it boldly, we must be just as bold in saying that we are new creations, free from our old, negative ways. Honestly, few of us can claim to be fully free. Many still hold on to the works of the flesh Paul lists: sexual immorality, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, jealousy, drunkenness, and selfish ambition (Galatians 5:19-21). Nobody must be perfect before being counted as in Christ, but anyone who says they are in Christ should make a real effort to rid themselves of whatever keeps them from being new.

Prayer, a willing heart, and steady effort are the keys. As we ask God for help, expect tests. Challenging situations will come, and they will require us to be selfless in order to let go of the old self and be clothed with the likeness of Christ. As Christ's ambassadors, our changed lives are our credentials. The world cannot see the new creation we claim to be unless our conduct shows it. Keep pressing on, and trust the One who began a good work in you to be faithful to complete it. May He guide us and give us the will to put away the old, so that we are made new in Him until He comes again.

Closing Prayer

Lord, I want to be new in You. Show me the old habits I am still holding on to, and give me a willing heart and the strength to let them go. Clothe me with the likeness of Christ, so that my life shows the world who You are. Amen.
