"...bless and do not curse."
Romans 12:14b (NIV)Words carry real power, which is why God attaches such importance to them (Psalm 138:2). Under the old covenant, He instructed His priests to speak a specific blessing over His people: "The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace" (Numbers 6:24-26). These words of benediction were meant to leave a lasting impact on the people who received them. Today, believers are described as a holy priesthood (1 Peter 2:5), which means this calling now rests on us. When we speak words of blessing over others, we make God's greatness, goodness, and love known to the people around us.
As Christ's ambassadors, our speech is part of our representation of Him. Jesus said His words are spirit and life (John 6:63), and Proverbs 18:21 reminds us that death and life are in the power of the tongue. Paul urges us to let our conversation be full of grace and seasoned with salt (Colossians 4:6), the kind of speech that brings peace and kindness into every exchange. A single encouraging word may be exactly what someone needs to keep going today. Blessing others with our words, even when we are tempted to respond otherwise, is a clear sign of God's love at work in us. Choose today to bless and not curse, and let your words make a difference in someone's life.
Lord, make my words a source of life and blessing to everyone I meet. Guard my tongue from careless or hurtful speech, and let my conversations be seasoned with grace. Use my words to make Your goodness and love known to those around me. Amen.
