"The Lord God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.' ... So, the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. ... The man said, 'This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man.' For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh."
Genesis 2:18, 20, 23-24 (NIV)Marriage was not a human invention or a cultural development that emerged over time. It was instituted and ordained by God Himself at the very beginning of human history. God looked at Adam, surrounded by every created thing, and declared that it was not good for him to be alone. No suitable companion was found among all the animals God had made, so God took a rib from Adam's side and fashioned Eve, bringing her to him as a helper perfectly suited to him. When Adam saw her, his response was one of immediate recognition and joy: "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh." From that moment, God established the pattern that would define marriage for every generation to come: a man leaving his father and mother to be united to his wife, the two becoming one flesh, a permanent and inseparable union.
Despite this clear and beautiful description in Genesis 2, many in our modern world view marriage as outdated, irrelevant, or simply optional, a relic of a simpler time rather than a sacred institution with divine origin and purpose. But God's design has not changed, regardless of how culture chooses to view it. Marriage remains His intended context for companionship, partnership, and the building of families that reflect His own covenant love. How you see marriage matters, not because tradition demands it, but because God Himself established it with intention and purpose from the very beginning.
Lord, thank You for designing marriage with such intention and care from the beginning of creation. Help me to see and honor marriage the way You do, as a sacred, permanent union rather than a relic to be dismissed. Renew my understanding of Your design and help me to live it out faithfully. Amen.
