"No one here has more authority than I do. He has held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God."
Genesis 39:9 (NLT)During a Bible class discussion on Joseph's life, one brother jokingly suggested that Joseph only resisted Potiphar's wife because he did not find her attractive. It was a lighthearted comment, but it exposes a real truth: many of us convince ourselves we would resist temptation, until the offer becomes appealing enough. Joseph's response reveals something deeper than personal preference. His goal was not merely to avoid an unattractive proposition; it was to please God, whatever the cost. "How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God." That is the standard every single person is called to pursue, purity rooted not in circumstance but in genuine devotion to God. The psalmist asked how a young person can stay pure and answered simply: by obeying God's Word (Psalm 119:9). Scripture leaves no ambiguity on this subject, repeatedly calling believers to flee sexual immorality (1 Corinthians 6:18), to put to death impurity and lustful desires (Colossians 3:5), and to pursue righteousness, faithfulness, and love instead (2 Timothy 2:22).
Paul is equally direct that those who persist in immorality and impurity have no inheritance in the kingdom of God (Ephesians 5:3-5), a sobering reminder that this is not a minor issue but one with eternal weight. The counsel given to Timothy is a helpful practical guide: treat others with the same purity you would treat your own family (1 Timothy 5:2), and run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts while surrounding yourself with those who call on the Lord with pure hearts (2 Timothy 2:22). Joseph's example is not limited to one moment with Potiphar's wife. His same conviction, "how could I sin against God," can and should be applied to every temptation a single person faces, guarding not only physical purity but the integrity of the heart from which every action flows.
Lord, give me the conviction of Joseph, a heart so devoted to You that no temptation, however appealing, can move me to sin against You. Help me to obey Your Word daily, surround myself with pure influences, and pursue righteousness above every fleeting desire. Amen.
