"The king answered the people harshly, for he forsook the advice of the elders which they had given him, and he spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, 'My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.'"
1 Kings 12:13-14 (NAS)Every day brings decisions, and every decision is shaped by whichever voices we choose to trust. In a world of constant, competing communication, discerning which voices deserve our loyalty has never been more difficult, or more consequential. Eve faced this test in the garden and chose to listen to the serpent over God, even though she had every opportunity to weigh his words against what God had already spoken. The result was catastrophic, not just for her but for her husband and all of humanity that followed. Centuries later, Rehoboam faced a similar test as king of Israel. Given the counsel of wise elders on one side and reckless young advisors on the other, he chose the harsher, foolish path, and it cost him a fractured kingdom. In both cases, the tragedy was not a lack of good counsel available, but a failure to heed it.
Even our closest relationships can fail us in moments of trial. Job's own wife urged him to curse God and die, and his three friends offered accusations rather than comfort in his darkest hour. The people we trust most can disappoint us precisely when we need them most, which is why our deepest dependence must rest on God's wise counsel rather than human voices, however close or well-intentioned. Peter and John modeled the right response when pressured by religious authorities to abandon their faith: "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge" (Acts 4:19). Every trial we face will bring its own competing voices, urging compromise, discouragement, or shortcuts. The question worth asking daily is simple: whose voice are you choosing to listen to, and obey, today?
Lord, help me to discern which voices deserve my trust and give me the courage to choose Yours above all others, especially in seasons of trial. When even those closest to me fail me, remind me that You remain my solid rock and my unwavering hope. Amen.
