"Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord and on His law he meditates day and night."
Psalm 1:1-2 (NIV)The psalmist describes a progression that begins subtly but leads to real spiritual danger: walking in the counsel of the wicked, standing in the way of sinners, and finally sitting in the seat of mockers. Each step represents a deepening entanglement with worldly influence, and it often starts with something as simple as accepting the wrong counsel, whether from others or from our own compromised reasoning. In a world that constantly presents attractive, persuasive voices, the temptation to follow worldly counsel is real and relentless, especially during trials when we are most vulnerable to shortcuts and easy answers. Yet nothing good ultimately comes from wisdom rooted outside of God, however appealing it may sound in the moment.
The safeguard against this slow drift is found in delighting in God's Word, meditating on it day and night rather than merely knowing it exists. When Jesus faced His own wilderness trial, tempted by the devil with promises that must have sounded remarkably good, He did not rely on cleverness or willpower but on Scripture memorized and readily available, defeating each temptation with the truth of God's Word (Matthew 4:1-11). That same defense is available to every believer today. The more deeply we know and love God's Word, committing it to memory and practicing it consistently, the less vulnerable we become to the counsel of the wicked, and the more equipped we are to withstand the trials designed to pull us away from Him. Delight in His law, and you will find the strength to stand firm no matter what pressures surround you.
Lord, help me to delight in Your Word the way the blessed man in Psalm 1 does, meditating on it day and night. Protect me from the counsel of the wicked, especially in seasons of trial when I am most vulnerable. Equip me with Scripture so that I, like Christ, can stand firm against every temptation. Amen.
