When the Foundations Collapse

"The foundations of law and order have collapsed. What can the righteous do?"

Psalm 11:3 (NLT)

The psalmist's question, "when the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?", captures the disorientation of watching moral and spiritual order crumble around us. Since the fall in Eden, sin has consistently reigned in the human heart, and Genesis 6:5 describes a civilization so corrupted that every inclination of the heart was continually evil. Israel's history offers a sobering case study. God chose them not for their strength but out of covenant faithfulness (Deuteronomy 7:7-8), yet across generations, from Moses to the judges to the kings, Israel repeatedly treated God's laws with contempt, doing whatever seemed right in their own eyes (Judges 17:6, 21:25). The result was national collapse and seventy years of exile and subjugation in Babylon. The pattern is consistent throughout Scripture: when the ties that bind a person, family, church, or nation to their Creator are severed through persistent contempt for His Word, ruin inevitably follows, unless there is genuine repentance.

This warning applies just as directly to believers today, including those who claim to follow Christ while rejecting His body, the church (Ephesians 1:22-23), a position Scripture treats as inherently contradictory. When foundations collapse around us, whether in society, in our families, or within our own hearts during trials, the answer is not to search for new paths but to return to the old, godly way. Jeremiah records God's own invitation: stand at the crossroads, look around, ask for the ancient paths, and walk in them, and you will find rest for your souls (Jeremiah 6:16). Tragically, many respond as Israel once did, refusing that road. In seasons when everything feels unstable, the righteous find their strength not in innovation but in returning faithfully to what God has always said is right.

Closing Prayer

Lord, when the foundations around me feel shaken, keep me from searching for new paths and instead lead me back to Your ancient, godly way. Give me the humility to walk in it even when others refuse. Let my soul find true rest in faithful obedience to You. Amen.
