Take Good Care of the Temple

"Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in your midst? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy that person; for God's temple is sacred, and you together are that temple."

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 (NIV)

Many Christians diligently avoid the obvious sins that damage the body, excessive drinking, smoking, sexual immorality, yet quietly neglect other habits that are just as destructive to their health and longevity. Skipping annual checkups, eating poorly, working without rest, living under constant stress, and neglecting exercise are rarely labeled as sin in Scripture, but Paul reminds us that our bodies are God's temple, and His Spirit dwells within us. That sacred reality carries responsibility. Just as the parable of the talents teaches that we will give an account of everything entrusted to us (Matthew 25:14-30), our bodies are among the resources God has placed in our care, and how we steward them matters to Him. Trials often reveal how fragile and precious this stewardship truly is, reminding us not to take our health for granted.

It would be tragic to shorten the very life God gave us for His purposes through carelessness or neglect. This is not about achieving physical perfection but about honoring the temple God has entrusted to us through simple, consistent choices, rest when needed, healthier eating, regular medical checkups, and avoiding habits that quietly erode our health over time. Renew your mind today about the seriousness of caring for your body. Treat it with the respect due to a sacred dwelling place of God's Spirit, so that you may live long, serve faithfully, and glorify Him for as many days as He grants you on this earth, especially through the trials that test both body and soul.

Closing Prayer

Lord, forgive me for the ways I have neglected the temple You have given me. Help me to take my physical health seriously, not out of vanity but out of reverence for Your Spirit who dwells within me. Give me the discipline to care for my body so that I may serve You faithfully through every season and trial. Amen.
