Modern-Day Golden Calves

"...the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem, they will again give their allegiance to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah. They will kill me and return to King Rehoboam." After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves. He said to the people, "It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt." One he set up in Bethel, and the other in Dan. And this thing became a sin; the people came to worship the one at Bethel and went as far as Dan to worship the other.

1 Kings 12:26-30 (NIV)

Jeroboam's decision to erect golden calves rather than risk his people's allegiance shifting back to Jerusalem seems almost unbelievable on the surface. How could the king of God's chosen nation genuinely expect his people to trade the living God for idols crafted by human hands? And yet, astonishingly, it worked. The people worshiped the golden calves, choosing convenience and political loyalty over covenant faithfulness. As strange as this story seems, the same pattern persists today, only the idols have changed shape. We rarely bow before literal statues, but anything that consistently displaces God from first place in our hearts and schedules functions the same way a golden calf once did for Israel.

In a fast-paced world where time feels scarcer than ever, it is remarkably easy to say, "I would love to do more for the Lord, but I am simply too busy," while pouring hours into work, entertainment, hobbies, or social media without a second thought. None of these things are inherently sinful, but when they consistently take priority over God, they quietly become modern golden calves, competing for the devotion He alone deserves. Jesus was clear about what matters most: love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30). The question worth asking honestly is who receives priority when time runs short, God or our own preferences and distractions. He is worthy of our very best, and nothing else should be allowed to take His place.

Closing Prayer

Lord, reveal to me the modern golden calves quietly competing for my devotion. Forgive me for the times I have prioritized busyness and distraction over You. Help me to love You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength, giving You the first place You alone deserve. Amen.
