"Jesus looked at him and loved him. 'One thing you lack,' he said 'Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.'"
Mark 10:21 (NIV)The rich young ruler had done everything right by external standards. He had kept the commandments since childhood, avoided murder, adultery, theft, and dishonesty, and honored his parents faithfully. Yet Jesus, looking at him with genuine love, identified the one thing still standing between him and eternal life. For this young man, it was wealth. For each of us, it may be something different, pride, an unforgiven grudge, a hidden habit, an idol we have grown so accustomed to that we no longer recognize its grip on our hearts. What makes this "one thing" so dangerous is precisely its subtlety. It hides in plain sight, woven so deeply into our identity that exposing it feels like losing a part of ourselves. Often, it is trials that God uses to bring this hidden thing into the light, stripping away comfort until we finally see clearly what we have been unwilling to release.
The young man's response is a sobering warning. When confronted with the truth, he went away sad, unwilling to release the one thing standing between him and the treasure Jesus was offering (Mark 10:22). Many of us face the same choice today, and many choose the same path, walking away from the fullness of salvation rather than embracing the painful process of letting go. Yet Jesus' invitation still stands: come, follow me. Through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, we can identify our own "one thing" and surrender it, not because obedience earns salvation, but because holding onto anything above Christ ultimately costs us far more than we realize. May we have the courage to face our one thing honestly and choose Christ over whatever we are tempted to cling to instead, even when the trial that exposes it feels unbearable.
Lord, reveal to me the one thing I have been unwilling to surrender to You. Give me the courage, through Your Holy Spirit, to release it fully rather than walk away sad. Use every trial to strip away what holds me back, and help me choose to follow You above everything else this world offers. Amen.
