"We love because he first loved us."
1 John 4:19 (NIV)Most days begin with an overwhelming to-do list, often carrying leftover tasks from the day before, leaving many wishing for more than twenty-four hours just to get everything done. That naturally raises an uncomfortable question: if there is barely enough time to finish work, is there truly enough time left for family and loved ones? It is worth considering how previous generations managed to sustain strong families and successful lives without personal computers, smartphones, microwaves, or fast transportation. If anything, modern technology should have made spending time with loved ones easier, yet time still feels perpetually scarce. The real issue was never about the generation or the tools available. It is about willingness.
John answers this directly: we love because He first loved us. When we were undeserving, still wrapped in sin, Christ interrupted His heavenly glory to come down and spend time with us, loving us so completely that He sacrificed Himself on our behalf. That same posture of willing sacrifice is what He calls us to extend toward our own families and loved ones. Making time for those closest to us is not primarily a scheduling problem; it is a matter of submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ (Ephesians 5:21) and making every effort to preserve unity and love within our homes (Ephesians 4:3). As you use whatever gifts and time God has given you, remember that loving your family well is itself an act of service, modeled directly after the love Christ first showed you.
Lord, thank You for making time for me when I was undeserving. Help me to love my family and loved ones the same way, willingly and sacrificially, even when my schedule feels full. Teach me to make time for what truly matters most. Amen.
