"The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure."
1 Corinthians 10:13 (NLT)A dog repeatedly stole his master's meat despite constant warnings, and each time he gave in, guilt overwhelmed him so deeply that he could not even bring himself to greet his master warmly upon returning home. His relationship with his master mattered to him far more than the fleeting pleasure of the stolen meat, yet whenever his eyes landed on the meat itself, temptation proved irresistible. Eventually, he had a realization: what if he fixed his gaze on his master instead of the meat? By focusing on his master rather than the temptation, he would naturally remember the instruction he had been given and find the strength to resist. This simple insight carries a profound truth for believers navigating temptation daily.
Every Christian striving to represent Christ faithfully will face temptation, and how we respond depends largely on where our focus rests. Oscar Wilde famously quipped that the only way to be rid of temptation is to yield to it, admitting he could resist everything except temptation itself. That is a surrender, not a strategy. Scripture offers a far better path: no temptation is unique to us, and God remains faithful, always providing a way of escape so that we can endure (1 Corinthians 10:13). That way of escape is most often found by fixing our gaze firmly on our Master, Jesus Christ, rather than on the temptation itself. When our attention stays locked on Him, His instructions and His presence guide us away from the very things that would otherwise pull us off course. As you serve Him with whatever gifts you carry, keep your eyes fixed on the Master, and let that focus be your defense against temptation.
Lord, help me to fix my gaze on You rather than on the temptations that cross my path. Thank You for Your faithfulness in always providing a way of escape. Strengthen my focus so that my love for You outweighs any fleeting pleasure temptation offers. Amen.
