"As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued as if he were going farther. But they urged Him strongly, 'Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.' So He went in to stay with them."
Luke 24:28-29 (NIV)Two disciples walked the road to Emmaus, weighed down by fear, disappointment, and shattered hope after witnessing the crucifixion. In the middle of that grief, a stranger joined them, and despite their own heaviness, their kindness compelled them to invite him to stay as evening approached. That stranger was Jesus Himself, and He appeared, at least momentarily, to be continuing on His way, testing whether their invitation was genuine (Luke 24:28). It took their strong urging before He agreed to stay. This scene captures something important about how God often works, especially in seasons of trial. He may seem to be passing us by, distant or uninvolved in our struggle, yet Scripture assures us that He has never actually left nor forsaken us (Hebrews 13:5). What He often waits for is our genuine, persistent invitation into the very situation that troubles us.
The moment Jesus stayed and broke bread with them, their eyes were opened and they recognized Him, later recalling how their hearts had burned within them as He spoke on the road (Luke 24:31-32). That same burning recognition of God's presence is available to us today, particularly in trials when His nearness feels hardest to perceive. Rather than assuming He has moved on or grown distant, we are invited to press in, to say, as the disciples did, "Stay with us." Whatever situation you are wrestling with today, invite Him into it deliberately and earnestly, trusting that His love for you is far too strong to turn down a genuine invitation. Let your heart burn within you as you sense Him drawing near, and let that presence move you toward deeper love and faithfulness (Mark 12:30-31).
Lord, in this trial, I invite You to stay with me. Do not let me assume You have passed me by when I struggle to feel Your presence. Open my eyes to recognize You in the ordinary moments of my day, and let my heart burn with the assurance of Your nearness. Amen.
