He Calms the Storm

"He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, 'Quiet! Be still!' Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to His disciples, 'Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?'"

Mark 4:39-40 (NLT)

Jesus knew exactly what awaited His disciples on the water that day. As the all-knowing God, He was fully aware that a fierce storm would arise, yet He still directed them to cross to the other side (Mark 4:35). This was intentional. Christ wanted His disciples to encounter His power firsthand and have their faith strengthened through the very trial they were about to face. Life has always been full of struggle, from the moment of conception until our final breath, and no journey with Christ comes with a guarantee that storms will be avoided. What is promised instead is that the storm will be calmed. Having Christ in the boat does not eliminate life's challenges, but it gives us the strength and assurance needed to surmount them.

The disciples' mistake in the middle of that storm was not that they were afraid, it was that fear caused them to momentarily forget who was in the boat with them. That same forgetfulness often happens to us. When life's storms feel overwhelming, our instinct is to panic rather than remember the One who has power over every wind and wave. Jesus' question to His disciples still applies to us today: why are you so afraid, do you still have no faith? He invites us, just as He invited them, to call on Him in the middle of the trial rather than waiting until we have exhausted every other option. At the right time, for our own good, He will stretch out His arm and calm whatever storm we are facing, for He makes all things beautiful in His time (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Trust Him fully, and let your faith be firmly rooted in the One who commands the storm.

Closing Prayer

Lord, when the storms of life feel overwhelming, remind me that You are in the boat with me. Forgive me for the fear that makes me forget Your power. Strengthen my faith so that I call on You in the middle of the storm and trust You completely to calm it in Your perfect time. Amen.
