Jesus Wept

"And Jesus wept."

John 11:35 (NLT)

Though the shortest verse in Scripture, "Jesus wept" carries some of the deepest theological weight in the entire Bible. Standing before the tomb of His friend Lazarus, surrounded by grieving sisters and a mourning crowd, Jesus did not merely cry, He wept, moved to visible, unrestrained emotion. This reveals something essential about God's heart toward us in our trials. He is not distant or indifferent to our pain. Scripture describes us as the apple of His eye (Zechariah 2:8), and whatever wounds us moves Him deeply as well. Mary and Martha's words to Jesus, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died" (John 11:21, 32), were not accusations but expressions of genuine faith in who they knew Him to be. His tears in response were not a lament over their unbelief but a demonstration of His profound, personal love for Lazarus and his grieving sisters.

This account teaches us both to trust God fully and to recognize the depth of His unselfish love, even in the middle of our darkest trials. Jesus was moved by the tears of those He loved, and He remains just as moved by ours today. When we release our problems into His hands, as Mary and Martha ultimately came to do (John 11:22, 27), we not only find solutions but also become living testimonies that draw others toward Him. Whatever trial you are walking through, do not let confusion or fear convince you that God has stopped caring. His love for you runs too deep for that, deep enough to weep, and deep enough to raise the dead.

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for the reminder that You are moved by my pain and never indifferent to my trials. When I struggle to understand Your ways, help me to trust You as Mary and Martha did. Let Your deep love for me anchor my hope, even in my darkest moments. Amen.
