"But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also."
Matthew 5:39 (NIV)Asking "must I do this?" or "must I do that?" often reveals a heart more concerned with the bare minimum than with genuine devotion to Christ. Scripture calls us instead to what could be called a second-mile religion, giving our very best rather than settling for just enough to maintain a technically right relationship with God. Jesus taught striking examples of this in Matthew 5, instructing His followers not to resist an evil person and to give to those who ask. Stephen embodied this spirit as he was being stoned, crying out, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them" (Acts 7:60), extending mercy even in his final moments. These commands, however, must be read within their full context. Christ refused to give the crowds at Capernaum what they sought because their motives were wrong (John 6:26-27), and Paul instructed that those unwilling to work should not be given free provision (2 Thessalonians 3:10). The principle is not blind compliance but willing, discerning submission rooted in genuine love for God.
This same spirit applies directly to how we serve within the church and beyond it. A Jew under Roman occupation needed love for God to override his resentment toward forced labor before he could carry a soldier's pack the extra mile with the right heart. We too must let our love for Christ override any reluctance in how we serve others with the gifts we have been given. Serving grudgingly, doing only what is required, misses the heart of what God desires from His people. Whatever work, ministry, or opportunity to serve is before you today, do it not resentfully but wholeheartedly, going beyond the minimum because you are ultimately serving Christ Himself.
Lord, deliver me from a minimum-effort faith that only asks what is required. Give me a heart that willingly goes the extra mile in serving You and others, not out of obligation but out of genuine love. Let my service reflect full devotion to Christ. Amen.
