Love in Deed, Not Just in Word

"For I want you to know what a great conflict I have for you and those in Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh, that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ."

Colossians 2:1-2 (NKJV)

Paul's letter to the Colossians reveals a heart deeply invested in a church he had not personally visited, even extending that same concern to believers in Laodicea and others he had never met face to face. His desire was for their hearts to be encouraged and knit together in love, reaching toward the full assurance of understanding found in Christ. This kind of love did not stem from personal acquaintance or convenience; it flowed from genuine spiritual conviction. As believers today, we are called to practice this same depth of love, one expressed through action rather than empty flattery. Just as God went to the greatest possible length to demonstrate His love by giving His only Son (John 3:16), we too are called to go beyond words when expressing love toward our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Genuine love requires actively resisting bitterness, anger, and negative thoughts toward one another, especially those closest to us. John reminds us plainly that we should love not merely with words or speech, but with actions and in truth (1 John 3:18). True love also includes the courage to offer constructive correction when a brother or sister strays into sin (Proverbs 15:31-33, 1 John 5:16), snatching them from danger with godly urgency and humility rather than judgment (Jude 1:23). This must always be done carefully, watching ourselves so we do not fall into temptation while helping to restore another (Galatians 6:1-2). As you serve within the body of Christ using the gifts God has given you, let that service be rooted in genuine, active love, the kind that builds up, corrects gently, and reflects the sacrificial love God has already shown us.

Closing Prayer

Lord, teach me to love in deed and truth, not merely in words. Help me to encourage, correct, and serve my brothers and sisters in Christ with genuine care. Give me the wisdom to gently restore those who stray, and the humility to guard my own heart as I do. Amen.
