Greatness Through Service

"Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant."

Matthew 20:26 (NKJV)

Nearly everyone desires greatness in some form, in education, business, relationships, or personal fulfillment. But Jesus redefined what true greatness looks like within His kingdom, turning worldly ambition completely upside down. He declared that whoever desires to become great must first become a servant. This is not a call to achieve status through conventional means but through sacrifice, self-denial, and genuine servanthood. To be great in Christ means emptying ourselves of carnal pleasures and self-interest, prioritizing the Master's purposes above our own comfort and ambition. Jesus Himself modeled this perfectly. He became the greatest of all not through power or position, but by coming down to serve both the Father and humanity, ultimately laying down His life for the very people He came to save.

The apostles and other faithful figures throughout Scripture embraced this same reordering of priorities, substituting their own interests for Christ's after encountering the transforming power of His salvation. Their greatness was never measured by personal achievement but by total submission to Him. It is worth remembering that it is not our own goodness that makes us clean or worthy, but the blood of Christ that sanctifies us completely. As we submit fully to Jesus, the greatest servant of all, we position ourselves to be genuinely used and empowered by Him. Greatness in God's kingdom is available to everyone without discrimination, but it requires a committed life of sacrifice, humility, submission, and service. Whatever spiritual gifts God has given you, use them in this same spirit of servanthood, and discover the greatness that comes only through serving others faithfully.

Closing Prayer

Lord, redefine greatness in my life according to Your standard, not the world's. Give me a heart willing to serve, sacrifice, and submit fully to Your purposes. Use whatever gifts You have given me in genuine service to others, and let my life reflect the servanthood of Christ. Amen.
