"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."
Romans 12:2 (NKJV)A story is told of a man chosen to serve as his nation's ambassador to an enemy country. To prepare, he learned the language, customs, and culture of that land so he could live peacefully among its people and complete his mission without raising suspicion. But he grew too comfortable. Showered with comforts, he fell in love with his new surroundings and forgot why he had been sent. The enemy took advantage and drew every bit of information from him. When his actions came to light, his own country branded him a traitor and cut ties with him, and that was only the beginning of his downfall.
Christians are ambassadors in the same way, trusted by God to represent the heavenly kingdom on earth. Peter calls us pilgrims and sojourners here (1 Peter 2:11), yet many of us have grown so attached to worldly pleasures that we have forgotten our true home. Paul's warning is direct: do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2). We cannot love the world and faithfully represent the One who sent us. The mission is demanding, but we are not home yet. Either we settle in with the world and betray our assignment, or we press on faithfully until we arrive safely home.
Lord, keep me from growing comfortable in a world that is not my home. Renew my mind daily, and guard my heart from the pleasures that would make me forget my mission. Help me to represent You faithfully until the day I return home to You. Amen.
