The Shepherd’s Reach

"Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn't he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?"

Luke 15:4 (NIV)

It is tempting to read this parable as a story about preference, as though the one lost sheep mattered more than the ninety-nine that remained. But that misunderstands the heart of the Shepherd. This is a story about pursuit, not favoritism. The ninety-nine were never abandoned. They remained secure, known, and provided for even as the Shepherd went after the one who wandered. Psalm 23 captures this security: the Lord is our shepherd, and we shall not want. He feeds those who remain (John 6:35), leads them faithfully (John 10:27), and restores their souls (Psalm 23:3). His willingness to pursue the one who strayed does not diminish His commitment to those who stayed close. It simply reveals how far His grace reaches, because every soul matters equally to Him (2 Peter 3:9).

A teacher once noticed a quiet student slipping into isolation while the rest of the class thrived. When she reached out, he asked why she had noticed him. Her answer was simple: because he mattered just as much as everyone else. He returned not because he was loved more, but because he had not been forgotten. That is the heart of God toward every person, whether faithfully walking close to Him or currently wandering far away. Salvation is not a competition for God's attention. It is an open invitation extended equally to all. God does not count people to determine their value. He values every single person He counts (Matthew 10:30). Let us never mistake His pursuit of the lost for neglect of the found. His grace holds all of us at once, fully and completely.

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for a love that pursues the wandering without ever forgetting the faithful. Help me to trust that Your attention toward others never diminishes Your care for me, and give me a heart that reflects Your pursuing love toward those who feel forgotten. Amen.
