"Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, 'Who do people say that the Son of Man is?' And they said, 'Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.' He said to them, 'But who do you say that I am?' Simon Peter answered, 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.'"
Matthew 16:13-16 (ESV)Jesus asked His disciples a probing question: who do people say that the Son of Man is? The answers varied widely, John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, one of the prophets. Then He made it personal: but who do you say that I am? Peter's answer was immediate and unshakeable: You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. That exchange carries a powerful mirror for every believer. As Christians, our lives are constantly in the public glare whether we intend them to be or not. Jesus declared that we are the light of the world, and light cannot hide (Matthew 5:14-16). The world around us is watching, drawing conclusions about Christ based on what they observe in those who claim to follow Him. We are not seeking human approval, but we are called to examine ourselves honestly to see whether what people observe in us truly reflects the faith we profess (2 Corinthians 13:5).
The early disciples transformed their world because their lives were consistent with their confession. They were recognizably different, and that difference pointed people to Christ. The same responsibility rests on us today. What account would the people in your life give of you as a Christian? Would they describe someone whose life reflects justice, love, integrity, and genuine faith, or would their description reveal a gap between your profession and your practice? Today is the day to close that gap. Aim to be the kind of light that people cannot function without, one that makes the presence of Christ undeniable in every room you enter.
Lord, give me the courage to ask honestly what my life says about You to the people watching. Where there is a gap between my confession and my conduct, convict and correct me. Make my life a light so consistent and genuine that people are drawn to You through what they see in me. Amen.
