"Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away. If one were to give all the wealth of one's house for love, it would be utterly scorned."
Song of Solomon 8:7 (NIV)Marriage, like every living thing, is meant to grow, develop, and mature over time, but that growth does not happen automatically. Scripture offers several guiding principles, sweet vitamins that spice and strengthen a marriage into something sound and lasting. It begins with seeing marriage as a sacred institution requiring consecration, a rehearsal for heaven where both partners commit to staying true until death parts them (Matthew 19:6). Marriages sour when couples trade consecration for carnality. Good communication follows closely behind, replacing assumption with openness so that partners truly know and understand one another. Equally vital is genuine consideration of a spouse's interests, allowing their input to shape decisions rather than acting unilaterally, and self-control when tensions rise, because no couple, however compatible, is immune to disagreement.
Marriage is ultimately for imperfect people committed to supporting one another toward growth, not for those seeking a flawless partner who does not exist. Compromise, contentment, and a willingness to carry your own responsibilities while helping to bear your spouse's burdens, rather than replacing them, are essential ingredients for a thriving home. If lifelong commitment is not something you are prepared to embrace, Scripture wisely counsels against entering marriage at all. But for those who do commit, applying these principles with the empowerment of the Holy Spirit can transform marriage into a place both partners are always glad to return to, sweet, secure, and unshaken by the many waters that try to quench genuine love.
Lord, help me to apply these principles faithfully in my marriage, consecration, communication, consideration, self-control, and compromise. Fill me with Your Spirit so that love in my home remains strong and unquenched by any trial. Make my marriage a sweet and sound reflection of Your love. Amen.
