Moving in the Same Direction

"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."

Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)

In 1944, a train carrying six hundred passengers through Salerno, Italy derailed, claiming nearly five hundred lives. Investigators discovered a devastating cause. The two locomotives pulling the train were both unbraked, but one was set in reverse while the other was pushed full ahead. They were fighting against each other the entire journey, and the result was catastrophe. No lives would have been lost had the engineers simply agreed on a direction. Marriage operates on the same principle. A husband and wife are two engines pulling the same train, and when their thoughts, values, and direction are not aligned, the relationship strains and eventually derails under the pressure. Oneness is not automatic. It requires deliberate, ongoing agreement on the most important things, especially the direction of the home's spiritual life.

Proverbs 4:23 reminds us that everything we do flows from the heart, which means the internal direction of each spouse ultimately determines the external course of the marriage. Couples are called to decide together, intentionally and repeatedly, that their thoughts and lives will move toward God, allowing His Word to renew their minds daily. This kind of unity does not happen by accident; it happens through shared prayer, shared values, and a shared commitment to guard the heart against anything that would pull the marriage in opposing directions. For those who are not yet married, now is the time to commit to this principle, praying and preparing to enter marriage already moving toward God, so that when two lives join, they pull the same train in the same direction.

Closing Prayer

Lord, unite my heart and my spouse's heart in the same direction, toward You. Guard our hearts from anything that would pull us apart, and renew our minds daily by Your Word. Help us to move forward together, not against each other, all the days of our lives. Amen.
