"The LORD God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.'"
Genesis 2:18 (NIV)God looked at Adam in the middle of a perfect creation and declared that something was not good: his aloneness. So He made a helper suitable for him, and marriage was born. But God's design for marriage goes far deeper than companionship and romance. His primary purpose was never to guarantee personal happiness or a problem-free home. It was holiness. Marriage is one of God's most powerful tools for shaping us into the people He has called us to be, because there is no relationship that exposes our selfishness, pride, and impatience quite as effectively as sharing a life with another imperfect person. The challenges of marriage are not signs that something has gone wrong. They are often the very means through which God is doing His deepest work in us.
This means that the most important change in any struggling marriage is usually not in your spouse but in yourself. Expecting your partner to be the primary source of your happiness is a burden no human being was designed to carry. That role belongs to God alone, and a strong personal relationship with Him is the only foundation that can sustain a lasting and godly marriage. Sacrifice and forgiveness are not occasional gestures but the roots from which the marriage tree must grow and endure. For those who are married, let your home be a place that glorifies God and points others to Him. For those preparing for marriage, enter it not primarily as a pursuit of happiness but as a sacred call to pursue holiness together.
Lord, transform my understanding of marriage from a pursuit of personal happiness to a pursuit of holiness. Where I have expected too much from my spouse and too little from You, forgive me. Give me the grace to change myself first, to forgive freely, and to build a home that brings glory to You. Amen.
