Counting All Things as Loss

"What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ."

Philippians 3:8 (NIV)

Christ set the ultimate example of selflessness, emptying Himself of His heavenly glory to take on human nature so that we could be saved (Philippians 2:5-8). He calls His followers to that same posture of surrender, steadfast in faith regardless of what it might cost. Yet many of us spend our lives fighting to hold on, to wealth, property, relationships, or people God may be trying to release from our grip. We resist His hand, insisting on controlling our own thoughts, decisions, and desires rather than trusting Him with the outcome. Paul's declaration is startling in its intensity: he counted everything, his achievements, his status, everything he had ever built, as garbage compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ. That is not a casual statement. It reflects a heart that had genuinely let go of everything the world values in exchange for something infinitely greater.

Letting go is rarely easy, especially when it involves something built over a lifetime, a career, a dream, a relationship, or a cherished ambition. But when these things do not align with what God has planned, holding onto them only hinders our growth and delays His best for us. Paul's testimony in Galatians 2:20 captures the heart of this surrender: "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me." Whatever sacrifice or loss you are walking through today, trust that God is using it to shape you into a better, more faithful follower of Christ. He has promised that everyone who loses something for His sake will be repaid abundantly, both here on earth and in eternity (Mark 10:28-31). Let go, and let God take control.

Closing Prayer

Lord, help me to release my tight grip on the things I have built my life around and trust You completely with what remains. Give me the courage of Paul to count all things as loss for the surpassing worth of knowing You. Let Christ live fully in me. Amen.
