"This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one." (NLT) Genesis 2:24. "The man who finds a wife finds a treasure, and he receives favour from the LORD." (NLT) Proverbs 18:22.
Genesis 2:24; Proverbs 18:22 (NLT)Marriage is the oldest institution God established, rooted in the Garden of Eden long before any other human structure existed. God recognized Adam's loneliness among the animals and provided a partner truly suited to him (Genesis 2:18), establishing from the very beginning that marriage was meant to be a lifelong, unbreakable bond. God is emphatic about this: He hates divorce, calling it an act of cruelty against a spouse (Malachi 2:16). While He permits divorce on the specific grounds of unfaithfulness (Matthew 19:9), His clear preference and original design is reconciliation and forgiveness (Colossians 3:13), never separation. Jesus Himself explained that divorce was only ever a concession to hardened hearts, not God's true intention from the beginning (Matthew 19:8). Paul reinforces this same standard for the church, urging spouses not to leave one another, and where separation has occurred, to pursue either reconciliation or remain unmarried (1 Corinthians 7:10-11).
Given the weight Scripture places on this covenant, choosing a marriage partner is one of the most significant decisions a Christian will ever make, second perhaps only to the decision of salvation itself, and the two are far more connected than many realize. A good marriage can strengthen your walk with God, while a poor choice, entered into carelessly, can strain or even damage it. God intends genuine happiness within marriage (Ecclesiastes 9:9), and a good spouse is described in Scripture as a gift from the Lord Himself (Proverbs 19:14, James 1:17). This means the pursuit of a marriage partner should never be rushed or approached casually, but sought prayerfully and intentionally, trusting God to lead you to the one He has divinely prepared.
Lord, help me to honor the covenant of marriage the way You designed it, lifelong, faithful, and rooted in forgiveness rather than separation. Guide those seeking a spouse to choose wisely and prayerfully, and strengthen every marriage to reflect Your unwavering commitment to Your people. Amen.
