Sowing Without Growing Weary

"Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."

Galatians 6:7-9 (NIV)

Paul's instruction to sow to please the Spirit rather than the flesh carries a striking companion warning: do not become weary in doing good. This is genuinely difficult teaching, because relying on our own strength alone almost guarantees exhaustion when the work of doing good stretches on without visible reward. Jesus addresses this exact struggle in John 15:4-5, reminding His disciples that no branch can bear fruit on its own, apart from remaining connected to the vine. Fruitfulness has never been about individual effort or willpower; it flows entirely from abiding in Christ. When we forget this and quietly begin to believe that our accomplishments for God stem from our own strength or righteousness, weariness and eventual failure are not far behind.

This truth becomes especially important during trials, when doing good, serving faithfully, giving generously, and persevering in ministry all demand energy we may not naturally have. If our strength to persevere comes from ourselves, we will inevitably run dry. But if it flows from our abiding connection to Christ, we can echo Paul's confident declaration in Philippians 4:13: "I can do all this through Him who gives me strength." Whether in your job, your finances, or any area of life dedicated to God's service, remember where your endurance must come from. Sow to please the Spirit, remain connected to the vine, and trust that at the proper time, if you do not give up, a harvest awaits.

Closing Prayer

Lord, help me to remain connected to You as the vine, drawing my strength to do good from You rather than my own limited resources. When weariness sets in, remind me that Your strength sustains what mine cannot. Let me sow to please the Spirit and trust You for the harvest. Amen.
