"Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."
Philippians 3:12-14 (NIV)Paul, despite his deep desire to know Christ fully, openly admitted that he had not yet arrived, nor was he sinless or perfect. Scripture consistently denies the possibility of sinlessness in this life, and anyone who claims otherwise is deceiving themselves (1 John 1:8). Yet Paul does not stop at this honest admission. He declares that all is not lost, because he presses on to lay hold of what Christ Jesus has already laid hold of him for. This is a powerful truth for anyone weary from trials: our imperfection does not disqualify us from the race, and the difficulties we face are not proof that God has abandoned His purpose for us. We must remain focused, trusting that the battles we wage in this life are not fought alone but are already being worked out according to what Christ has determined is best for us.
Forgetting the past, our failures, defeats, mishaps, and disappointments, is genuinely difficult, but Paul insists it is necessary if we are to reach forward toward what lies ahead. These setbacks are not meant to define us; they are meant to serve as a launching pad toward a brighter future in Christ. Like an athlete keeping their eyes fixed on the prize, we too must press on with intentional focus, remembering that our reward is not perishable like an athlete's crown but eternal (1 Corinthians 9:24-25). Every trial we endure is part of a race worth finishing well. Do not let past mistakes or present hardships convince you to give up. Forget what is behind, reach forward with determination, and press on toward the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Keep on keeping on.
Lord, help me to release the weight of my past failures and press forward toward what You have called me to. In every trial, remind me that imperfection does not disqualify me from Your purpose. Give me the endurance to keep my eyes fixed on the eternal prize You have promised. Amen.
