"For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich."
2 Corinthians 8:9 (NKJV)Many spend their lives chasing pleasure, possessions, and power, sacrificing everything within reach to obtain them, only to discover that none of it follows the soul beyond this life. Christ's example points us toward a different kind of wealth entirely. Though rich beyond measure, He became poor for our sakes so that through His poverty we might become truly rich (2 Corinthians 8:9). This is the foundation of Christian joy, not built on fleeting circumstances but on the unshakeable reality of who God is and what He has done. That joy flows from three sources: God's proven faithfulness throughout history, His active involvement in the world today, and His certain promises for the future. From Adam to Abraham to Moses, Scripture records a God who remained engaged with humanity even after sin entered the picture, never abandoning His creation despite every failure.
That same faithfulness continues in the present. Christ promised to be with us until the end of the age (Matthew 28:20), and unlike humans, God does not disappoint and cannot lie. His decisions are always best, and His provision can be trusted completely. Looking ahead, His promises remain just as certain. Peter describes believers as born again into a living hope through Christ's resurrection, into an inheritance that is incorruptible, undefiled, and reserved in heaven (1 Peter 1:3). The hope of the righteous ends in gladness, while the expectation of the wicked perishes (Proverbs 10:28). Given all that God has done, is doing, and has promised to do, joy is not simply an option for the believer, it is the only reasonable response to a God who has proven Himself faithful across every generation and every trial.
Lord, thank You for becoming poor so that I could become rich through Your grace. Remind me in every trial that Your faithfulness in the past, Your presence today, and Your promises for tomorrow give me every reason for lasting joy. Help me to trust You completely, no matter what I face. Amen.
