All Things Work for Good

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to His purpose."

Romans 8:28 (NIV)

There is a saying that if problems were shoes, the moment you removed yours, someone would be ready to trade theirs for it. Struggling through a difficult first year in university, feeling overwhelmed by an especially demanding course, offered a firsthand lesson in this truth. A senior colleague and fellow church member, known for his consistently infectious smile, prompted the question: did this man simply have no problems at all? His answer revealed something far deeper than surface-level cheerfulness. He, too, carried real burdens, personal struggles far heavier than a difficult course load, yet he refused to let those problems steal his joy, trusting that God would deal with them in His own way and time. That perspective reframed everything. What had felt like an unbearable weight suddenly seemed small compared to what others were quietly carrying, and it became clear that giving in to misery accomplished nothing.

Romans 8:28 does not promise the absence of trials; it promises that God works all things, even the genuinely hard and painful ones, for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. This is not a call to force a smile when a situation is truly difficult, but it is a call to refuse to abandon faith in the middle of hardship. Life will burden us in ways that sometimes make us want to give up entirely. In those moments, faith becomes the anchor we must hold onto as tightly as possible, trusting that God is at work even when the outcome is not yet visible. Whatever trial you carry today, do not let it convince you that all is lost. Hold fast to the promise that God is working it for your good.

Closing Prayer

Lord, when my problems feel unbearable, remind me that You are working all things together for my good. Give me the faith to hold on tightly, even when I cannot see the outcome, and let my trust in You remain steady through every trial I face. Amen.
