Pursue righteousness

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied." (NIV) Matthew 5:6

1 Peter 3:14 "But even if you should suffer for righteousness 'sake, you will be blessed...".

Striving to be righteous in this sinful world is extremely challenging. You manage with all your might to put on the breast plate of righteousness (Ephesians 6:14) but the every moment you think you are in a good shape, life’s unforeseen circumstances smashes the breast plate and forces you to relinquish it. What do you do then?

Well, to carry the cross and follow our Lord Jesus Christ is not an easier task. The bible stories about the lives of the prophets, our Lord Jesus and his disciples are facts to this effect. It is in light of this that our Lord Jesus admonishes us to pursue righteousness as if we were starving and it would satisfy our hunger. Abraham believed God even to the dying moments of sacrificing his only beloved son on the altar to God (Genesis 22:1-12). This act was accounted to him as righteousness. Noah lived in the days when evil deeds of man had ascended to God and caused God to regret creating man (Genesis 6:9-12). But among all this wicked men, God saw Noah as a righteous man and determined to save him from the world’s destruction (Genesis 6:9-9:15). Noah in obedience to God constructed the ark in reverent fear and became an heir of righteousness (2 Peter 2:5).

In our Christian era, righteousness is revealed in the gospel. It is faith through Jesus that we became righteous. In like manner, we must discipline ourselves to attain righteousness. The gift of righteousness comes only by obedience. It is the gift of God that he freely gives to those who are faithful and obedient and it leads to eternal life. God will judge the world based on obedience and righteousness. The reward of righteousness is great; in heaven all will be righteous.
