"Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus"(NIV) 1 Thessalonians 5:18

I have been an unhappy person all through this year until Friday, 23rd November, 2012. The reason for unhappiness is that a prayer of mine still remains unanswered. On this fateful day, it dawned on me to recollect memories of past days and upon that I realized I have been ungrateful to my maker instead.

My friends and I sat in the auditorium of the great hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) - Ghana waiting to be graduated with a master’s degree. In a playful way, we began to recall our adventures along the Cape Coast – Accra road every other weekend. These adventures were within the two years of our studies. The blessings of constant safe journey were first acknowledged by all. Although, we joked about some of the other events, I was conscious of the fact that a supreme being (God) had protected us and made all this possible. Personally, I began to realize that aside completing my master’s studies safely and on time, I had more to be thankful and happy for than the sadness I harbor in my heart.

This year had seen my mom recover from a fatal illness. I narrowly escaped a fatal motor accident unhurt. Every member of my family has been in good health. My two favorite cousins got married and are now mothers. And the list continues. Beloved, counting my blessings on that day, made me realize that the grace of God was far sufficient for me. The day became the turning point in my life and since then, I have been a happier person. I keep counting my blessings and believing that in God’s own time, he will answer this prayer of mine.

Beloved, I guess my unhappiness might not be comparable to what you have been through. Perhaps, you might have even doubted the existence of God and his power to answer prayers. Well, I suggest you beginning counting your blessings now. God helped me to see the numerous blessings around me and I am grateful. It is my prayer that he also helps you to see and start counting the blessings around you so that you can give him the praise and honor he deserves.

HYMN: Count your blessings

When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,

When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,

Count your many blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

REFRAIN

Count your blessings, name them one by one,

Count your blessings, see what God hath done!

Count your blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
