Created for significance

Written by Nana Kwame Owusu-Afriyie.

"Only fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and their actions are evil; not one of them does good!” (NLT) Psalm 14:1

Who would have ever thought that the so called STEM subjects and the body of knowledge in the liberal arts will consign men to the foolery of denying the existence of God? Who would have thought that some of the finest scientific minds could be that dumb to think that they could prove the existence of God through science, and having failed stridently vow as atheists? Indeed if one could prove the existence of God through science, will He remain God Almighty?

“Lord, let them excel in their education, and let the knowledge they seek help them to understand the Bible first,” was the prayer for the youth by one of my church elders. If our so called sophisticated scientific minds could only lead us to unwittingly and unabashedly argue and write about the plausible non-existence of God then I daresay we are worse than the unschooled, whose perceived ignorance is enough to make them believe that there is a God. The Bible was very blunt – such thinking makes us fools.

In his sermon, Created for Significance, Dr. Ravi Zacharias, Christian Author and Apologist had this to say:

I well recall some months ago when I was doing some studies at Cambridge University how the entire campus was busting with expectation. There was a sense of tremendous anticipation because they were going to listen to the man who is considered “the greatest theoretical physicist since Einstein and I’m talking to you about Stephen Hawking.

His book, A Brief History of Time, has topped the charts for years and it’s been in the bestseller list for Great Britain longer than any other book up to this point where he gives his entire scientific and philosophical view of how this world came into being and why we are.

Stephen Hawking, as many of you know, is a victim of Lou Gehrig’s disease, he cannot even speak; he has no voice. Twenty years ago, the doctor told him he will not be living too long, but he’s defied all odds. He holds the Lucasian Chair for Mathematics at Cambridge University, once upon a time held by Sir Isaac Newton.

This man is a genius in every scientific sense of the term. One of his secretaries testified that on a single occasion he dictated forty – six pages of notes of equations back to back without a single piece of paper in front of him. And then half way through he bucked up and went back about twenty pages recognising he’s made one mistake along the way. He has no voice, how does he speak? Courtesy one of Californians prestigious institutions they have designed for him a computer because the only movement capacity he has is an index finger that moves about one millimetre.

Come to think of it, this victim of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ASL), who was given no shot at life, miraculously saved, is blatant enough to write bestsellers and deliver speeches to a packed audience on the non-existence of God. One would have thought that his fine scientific mind will make him reason that his very life is a great evidence of an All-Powerful God. “So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish” (1 Corinthians 1:21, NLT). We were created for significance in God. Outside God, this life of four score years and ten transcends insignificance.
