What are you thankful for?

Written by Dede Abebreser Tsonyake.

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (NIV) 1 Thessalonians 5:18 “Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all His benefits” (NIV) Psalm 103:2

As I listen to Cocomelon's nursery rhyme song, “what are you thankful for”, I couldn’t help but start wondering what am I thankful for? The song has numerous things listed to be thankful for. We teach our children to be thankful for things we consider “little” but we adult find those things our rights so never remember to be thankful for them but waiting for the “big” things to be thankful. We are not entitled to anything we have, whether “big” or “small”, everything we have, has been given freely by God and we must be thankful for all.

The benefits of the Lord are so enormous but if we are to recount them, I do not think we can enumerate more than twenty blessings the Lord has freely given, though, we do not deserve. If you are like me who can only recall few blessings in my life, take a minute and listen to the Cocomelon nursery rhyme song, “what are you thankful for” on YouTube and you will be reminded greatly about all the millions of blessings the Lord bestows.

We are admonished as Christians to be thankful in all circumstances for it is the will of God for us. Reading 1Thessalonians 5:18 all over again, it is very clear that, even in situations we deem “bad”, we still need to give thanks because it is the will of God for us. This must be difficult indeed but doable. We can only be thankful in uncomfortable situations when we are able to identify a blessing within every situation. We need to look deeper, think deeper and ask God to make us see the blessing in any situation and we can be thankful no matter what the circumstances may be.

May our hearts be forever grateful to God and our mouths forever be thankful to God for all blessings and situations we may encounter. God bless you.
