A Perfect Man (Part II)

Written by Philip Addo Bempong.

“For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body" (KJV) James 3:2.

Bible reading: James 3:2-8

In our previous devotion, we focused on God's part as we strive to be a perfect man. In this second part, we will turn our attention to some other practical things on our part to do.

Assume responsibility for every word you speak. God desires that you speak the truth (see Ephesians 4:25 and Psalm 15:2) and that you keep your word (see Matthew 5:37). He will hold you responsible for what you speak. “...Every idle word that men shall speak; they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment” (Matthew 12:36).

Subject yourself to peer review. Those around you - family, fellow Christians, friends, co-workers, and acquaintances could help. Ask them about your speech patterns and evaluate the observations they make (see Proverbs 27:6, 17).

Learn to speak words that will encourage, comfort, inspire, and edify. Ask God to guide you to speak words that will honour Him and accomplish His purposes. “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone” (Colossians 4:6). “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.” (James 3:13).

Your words indicate what is in your heart. (See Luke 6:45.) In your efforts to control your tongue, follow the Apostle Paul’s admonition: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” (Philippians 4:8). When the thoughts of your heart are focused on what is good and true, your words will reflect it, bringing honour to God and others.

How often do you commit your mouth (tongue) into God's hands?

How sweet are your words?

How careful are you when speaking?

May the Almighty God help us all to make these important Bible base suggestions a part of us (day-in-day-out) to bridle our tongue to be a perfect man for God. Amen.
