Let the peace of Christ rule

Written by Eric Coffie.

"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful." (NIV) Colossians 3:15

In John 14:27, Jesus Christ just as He was about to go to the cross said to His disciples "Peace I leave you with you, my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." What peace was Jesus referring to as "my peace"? He said, not as the world gives do I give to you.

This means that there is some form of peace that is different from what the world gives. The world's view of peace depends on the validation of our emotions, it is a place of utopia, where there is no suffering and tribulation. Jesus' peace is different since it is based on our trust in Him. This kind of peace exists even in times of tribulations as promised in John 16:33.

An example of Jesus' peace is the joy and contentment one finds when he/she comes to Christ. The Apostle Paul and his co-workers continually chose to rejoice (because of the peace of Christ) even in the moments of their greatest suffering in 2 Cor. 6:9-10: "as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as chastened, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things." What we often think of as peace is not how God sees it because His thoughts are not like our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9).

How then do we find Christ's peace? Jesus again shows us the way to find His peace. The first step to finding the peace of Christ is to remove fear and panic from our lives and allow God's peace to rule always in our hearts. This is similar to the advice that Moses gave to the Israelites when they came to the red sea and their enemies were pursuing them. Moses told them to be still, unafraid, and to focus on the salvation from the Lord (Exodus 14:13). As Jesus said, in this world, there are tests and trials, but we are to be cheerful in tribulations and suffering (Matthew 5:11-12, John 14:27). We must not allow the difficulties in this world to overcome the peace of Christ within our hearts.

It is our divine duty to let the peace of God rule even during uncertain times with the faith and belief that Christ has overcome the world. In all you do, ask God for His peace that surpasses all understanding.
