When the Lord tarries for a season, it’s for a reason

"Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. Yet when He heard that Lazarus was sick, He stayed where He was for two more days." (NIV) John 11:5-6

The love of God towards the world cannot be overemphasized (John 3:16). We see this in the love of Jesus clearly seen in its full expression by His incarnation and ultimately giving of His life for all, for there is no greater love than laying down one’s life for his friends (John 15:13).

It appeared that the ailment of Lazarus was growing from bad to worse. The sisters of Lazarus managed to send word to the Lord Jesus about their brother’s sickness. And yet, Jesus delayed His response for two days.

Why will Jesus not act rather swiftly? Better still, Jesus could just speak the word. After all, He did the same for a centurion during His ministry (Matthew 8:8). But Jesus was so close a friend to Mary and Martha. And a friend in need is a friend indeed. Why will Jesus do such a thing- not seeming to care in such a difficult time? These among others are the thoughts that may come to anyone of us, as it may have occurred to the siblings of Lazarus. No wonder they later committed their hope only in the future resurrection, when the resurrection was right before them, the Lord Jesus (John 11:23-25). God acts in His own good time. We must trust the Lord, in the use of time: “for time and seasons are set in the authority of God” (Acts 1:6). And all things will work together for our good to the glory of God. But every happening has the right timing.

Again, the methods of God’s dealings with us are not monotonous. Each one of us is special to God and He has quality time for every one of us. He does not do “cut and paste” problem solving with us. Thus, we need not compare ourselves with others and how God visited them or dealt with them. God has a schedule for you and me.

God does not succumb to the limited perspectives of men. God always sees the total picture. Therefore, there is no rashness with God, though He speedily hears and helps us (Luke 18:8) as dear children of His. The response may not necessarily be instantaneous, but He acts unfalteringly by His timeline. The love of Christ sustains us in all things and it’s greater than any antagonist in this life (Romans 8:37-39).

Every season has a reason, and the Lord controls them both. We can confidently leave both with Him: He will be glorified through our blessings just as Lazarus’ resurrection glorified God (John 11:4). Praise the Lord!
