Rebuke false teachers!

Written by Christopher Opey Tetteh.

“For there are many rebellious people, full of meaningless talk and deception, especially those of the circumcision group. They must be silenced because they are disrupting whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach-and that for the sake of dishonest gain. One of Crete’s own prophets has said it: “Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.” This saying is true. Therefore, rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the merely human commands of those who reject the truth. To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.” (NIV) Titus 1:10-16

Falsehood and deception can be overcome by godly leadership and sound doctrine. We can only reproach false teachers by teaching in humility the sound doctrine of our Lord Jesus Christ which has been passed unto us through His Apostles and the early converts of Christianity (Titus 2:1).

Again, we must prepare thoroughly to educate them. We need to be Word-abiding Christians and also be matured in the Word of Christ. It is not like a student who aspires to take his final exams and hopes in the Lord only but studies not. It is a complete failure for such a student. Every Christian must learn and know the doctrine of Christ and also stand in it to rebuke, exhort, teach, reprove, and correct. It is more than essential to equip ourselves thoroughly for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Many people will challenge and argue that what we do (rebuking, teaching, and reproofing) is judging other Christians. To correct a falsehood is a biblical principle and we must do so. In 2 Timothy 4:1-2, Paul advised Timothy to teach in and out of season till the end of time and we must do likewise. However, in our quest to correct and teach, our goal is to win a soul for Christ hence the process must be in humility.

As we strive to reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and teach the Word to the world, we humbly ask God for his strength, courage, eloquence, and divine wisdom in Jesus Christ name, Amen!
