Both are important to God

Written by Christabel Ofori.

"Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come." (NLT) 1 Timothy 4:8

Our spiritual life is the most important thing in our lives. Living a life of righteousness which God approves should be a priority in everyone’s life. However, that is not all that God cares about. In fact, God cares for the physical and also the spiritual aspect of our lives. When we are both physically and spiritually healthy, the glory goes to Him. This shows we also should pay as much attention to our physical well-being too.

Exercising, eating healthy, getting those medical check-ups etc; these are all part of God's plan for us. Instead of that meaty burger, switch to small quantities of lean meat. Also, eating more fruits and vegetables and making time to enjoy our hobbies are some healthy practices we would all want to consider. Walking briskly over a reasonable distance also reduces calories and keeps the body healthy. Not forgetting good old friend, “water”. Drinking eight glasses of water or more a day goes a long way to help maintain good physical health.

While we care for our physical needs, our mental needs are also important. It is important to talk to someone (a good friend, a relative, a mentor, etc) when feeling down and also take some time off work to rest when depressed or stressed. It is worth noting that our God controls everything and we should worry less or not at all and hand everything to him anytime we feel depressed.

Our bodies are the temple of God. 1 Corinthians 16:19-20 says, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body.” We should therefore not feed our minds and bodies with bad habits like excessive drinking of alcohol, smoking of cigarette and hard drugs, sexual thoughts and talks, bad eating habits etc. because these things make our bodies unfit as the temple of God and God will never dwell in an unfit body. May God help us to take care of ourselves spiritually as well as physically. Amen!
