Marriage is still God's idea

Written by Philip Addo Bempong.

“The Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." ... So, the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. ... The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman, ' for she was taken out of man." For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” (NIV) Genesis 2:18, 20, 23 & 24

God instituted and ordained marriage at the very beginning of human history. In Genesis 2, God declared his intention for marriage. The chapter also describes how God, taking a rib from the side the man He had already created and fashioned from it a woman to be a "suitable helper" (Gen 2:20) for a man. Then God brought the man and woman together to confirm their relationship as husband and wife, thereby ordaining the institution of marriage.

From the onset, God established marriage as a permanent relationship, the union of two separate people; man and woman into "one flesh". When Adam first laid his eyes on Eve he exclaimed; "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman, ' for she was taken out of man." (Gen 2:23, emphasis added). In Genesis 2:24, we clearly see God’s design for marriage; for this reason, a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Despite this description in Genesis 2, many are still confused about marriage in our modern world. The institution of marriage is often seen irrelevant, an archaic relic of a simpler and more naive time. How do you see marriage?
