What will be your legacy?

Written by Alfred Ofori Agyemang.

"Praise the LORD! How blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who greatly delights in His commandments. His descendants will be mighty on earth; The generation of the upright will be blessed." (NASB) Psalm 112:1-2

When someone dies, the family and friends try to put up tributes based on what they knew about the person. These tributes are based on the positive things of the dead person. These positive earthly tributes are not as important as how God's tribute will be. What will your legacy be before God and the world?

Majority of people assume they have enough time on earth and spend all the time chasing educational certificates, building businesses, houses and forming families. It is good and pleasant to acquire all the physical things of this world. However, they are not what we were created for and that is definitely not the legacy we want to leave. Marriage couples, what kind of legacy will you and your spouse leave? Will it be lasting? Will it be imperishable and eternal? Or will you leave behind only tangible things like buildings, money and possessions? The apostle Paul instructed Timothy to leave a legacy by investing the gospel in faithful men who would be able to pass God's truth on to the next generation (2Tim. 2:2). Where does God want you to invest the time you have been given?

To live a life with the greatest legacy, fear the Lord and obey Him. Your legacy begins in your heart and in your relationship with God. Recognize the world's needs and respond with compassion and action. In Matthew 9:36 we read: "And seeing the multitudes. He [Jesus] felt compassion for them." You need to leave a legacy by being committed to doing something about our world. "Some men show courage throughout the whole of their lives. Others sail with the wind until the decisive moment when their conscience and events propel them into the center of the storm." If you want to leave a lasting legacy, you need to act with the courage to reach out to those in need (John F. Kennedy).

Praying and allowing God to use you in his divine purpose can guarantee you a good legacy. Help other people to identify their talents and maximize their potentials for God. Help people determine what they are willing to die for so they can ultimately determine what they can live for. Remember, Christians are not here on earth to create a heritage of properties but to leave a lasting legacy of God on earth. Amen.
