Be destitute for the Lord

Written by Eddy Amihere.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (NIV) Matthew 5:3

Bible reading: Matthew 5-7

The Lord begins His great sermon on the mount by saying blessed are the poor in spirit. According to Matthew 9:12, Christ said only those who are sick have need of a physician. Likewise, every soul has to acknowledge that he is destitute for the gospel which is the power of God unto salvation before he can inherit the kingdom of heaven.

The Prophet Isaiah said "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor" (Isaiah 61:1-3) which will encourage the broken-hearted, proclaim liberty to the captives, comfort all who mourn, bring to all; the oil of gladness and the garment of praise and guide us into the way of righteousness.

Like the poor widow cherished to preserve the last stock of food left (1 Kings 17:8-24) so should we cherish our soul and be in constant need for the Lord. Our Lord is abundant in mercies, goodness and favour and above all eternal life -just be destitute for the Lord.
