The true life

Written by Nana Kwame Owusu-Afriyie.

One fascinating commonality among the Forbes wealthiest people in the world is their act of benevolence. Read their profile and they proudly want to be tagged as philanthropists. They have realized the Christian principle that their lives should not be measured in the abundance of their wealth but their goodwill to change lives through their generous giving.

Forbes richest man, Bill Gates made his first million dollars when he was merely a teenager. In an interview granted to a group of media outlets, he indicated that his act of philanthropy was borne out of the advice his mother impressed upon him as a teenage boy. His mother advised him that if he wanted to have a true, fulfilled life he should share his wealth with the poor. Bill has managed to persuade other billionaires such as Warren Buffet and they have become signatories to a giving pledge. When he was outdooring his baby girl, Mark Zuckerberg, Forbes richest youngest person, and his wife Priscilla Chan announced to the world that they will donate their fortune over the course of their lives to make the world better for their girl and the kids of the world. J.K. Rowling, probably the most successful writer in the 21st century, who rose from rags to riches decided to lose her millionaire status by giving most of her fortune to a worthy cause. She would rather be called a giver than a millionaire.

I can go on and on and tell you examples of wealthy people whose lives have become rich and fulfilled because of their benevolent spirit. Most of these people are not Christians per se but they are living up the Christian principle in 1 Timothy 6:17-19. You don’t need to be a billionaire to be benevolent. With your widow’s mite, you can change lives. Never forget that givers never lack and if you don’t grow weary of doing good you will reap a generous reward in due time.
