"But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness." (NIV) 1 Thessalonians 5:4-5

Back in my high school days there was a spontaneous event called 'Roll Call' where students are called to assemble. It was an event that caused fear and consciousness among most students. Even the notorious students often referred to as 'hard core' students would not dare to miss a roll call. One principal reason why it caused such a panic and obeisance from a large population of students was the punishment associated with it. Students who were absents from a roll call faced strict punishment including dismissal from the school. Despite the consequences of missing out a roll call, there were always absentees.

In Christianity, we believe in the second coming of our Lord Jesus and the day of judgement (Matt. 24:30-31; Matt. 25:31-46). The judgement day, in my opinion can be likened to the roll call although it is of a higher degree of seriousness. In this light, I hope we (Christian) will never dare to miss when the ROLL IS CALLED UP YONDER! The negative consequence is far greater. People who will miss out will wail and gnash their teeth because the punishment will be eternal (Matt. 13:41-42; Jude 1:7). The heavenly roll call will happen unannounced and the punishment is real and far more severe (1 Thess. 5:2; 2 Pet. 3:10). At this call there will not be any favoritism as may be the case in human institutions. The judgement of the Just Lord is fair (John 5:30).

Beloved reader, will you be there when the roll is called up yonder? James M. Black (1893) upon feeling the disappointment of one of his Sunday school children failing to turn up for an important event said "Well, I trust when the roll is called up yonder, she'll be there". That led Black to pen down this hymn:

"When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more,

And the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair;

When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore,

And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.”

Beloved, let us work our salvation with fear and trembling (Phil. 2:12) so that when the roll is called up yonder, you and I will be there. God bless you! .

  Our heavenly dwelling || More

“Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.” (ESV) Matthew 24:42

The thought of heaven is so overwhelming it will be too sad if anyone misses the opportunity to be there. Unfortunately, some people are working hard to miss this fine opportunity to be with our Lord in the most beautiful place one can ever imagine. Oh! How sad!

Making it to heaven requires hard work too. One of the requirements is to live lives worthy to be called a Christian. As Christians, our lives have to resemble the 6 o'clock time on the clock. The longer arm of the clock is more active than the shorter one. It is constantly at work so as Christians, our lives should constantly focus on eternity while we dedicate just a little fraction of our lives on our earthly business. We should not be too busy with relationships, work and gathering wealth because in the end it is how we lived our lives for God here on earth is what will matter. So as we go through our day, we should constantly ask ourselves where we wish to spend eternity. 1 John 2:17 tells us that this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave, but anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.

We do not know when our dear master and savior Jesus is coming so we should live our lives in a way that when the trumpet sounds today, we will make it to our beautiful home in heaven. Let us all guard our salvation with jealousy for this earth is just a transit.

  The dream of God || More

"The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results"(NLT) James 5:16b

How many times haven’t we heard sermons about the potency of prayer? How many times haven’t we read awe-inspiring stories about how prayer changes things? How many times haven’t we seen and felt the evidence of an Invisible Hand directing the course of men because they prayed. From the Old Testament to the New Testament, from the rise of empires to the fall of empires, from revolutions to counter-revolutions, from the dawn of civilization to the twilight years of history, prayer has been an indomitable force of men of faith as they “overthrew kingdoms, ruled with justice, received what God had promised them, shut the mouth of lions, quenched the flames of fire, escaped death by the edge of the sword; their weakness turned into strength, became strong in battle and put whole armies to flight, women received their loved ones back again from death” (Hebrews 11:33-35, NLT). Yet in this fast-paced materialistic world, even God’s generals are weary and woebegone at the precipice of the battlefield.

Why is prayer not so much part and parcel of our Christian life? Why do we struggle so much to pray? Is it because we feel God doesn’t answer prayers anymore? The famed Christian Apologist C.S. Lewis in his book Letters to Malcolm: Chiefly on Prayer had this to say:

“They tell me Lord, that when I pray,

Only one voice is heard;

That I’m dreaming,

You’re not there,

This whole is thing is absurd.

Maybe they’re right, Lord,

Maybe they’re right.

Maybe there’s only one voice that’s heard.

But if there’s only one voice that’s heard,

Lord, it’s not mine, it’s your voice.

I’m not dreaming; you are the dreamer

And I am your dream.”

A praying Christian becomes the dream of God. He becomes the prism through which God disperses His spectral colours to the hideous world.

  Trusting in God || More

“O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, what joy for those who trust in you.” (NIV) Psalms 84:12

It really is an amazing joy to know God and trust in Him. I know God is in control of everything but I often struggle with living this out in my day to day life. When things get crazy, life can do a good job of crowding God out if we let it. If you’re not yet a Christian, consider the amazing freedom that can come through a relationship with God. If you are a believer, remember the commitment you have made to put God first in your life. If we truly trust that He loves us and is looking out for what’s best for us, there is no need to worry. What an amazing gift! This passage reminds me of another section from the New Testament.

Acts 17:24-28: “He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn’t live in man-made temples, and human hands can’t serve his needs—for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need. From one man he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries. “ His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him—though he is not far from any one of us. For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’”

All we have to do is trust, and who better to trust than the God of the universe, the one who created our very souls!

  Getting wisdom to face today's world || More

“Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Esteem her and she will honour you.” (NIV) Proverbs 4: 7-8

People often have the perception that formal education is everything that matters and this is because the world has made it so. We spend countless hours and days studying books that are written by men for exams in order to be awarded earthly and physical degrees; degrees that fade away and lose their value with time. This is not to say we need not to be educated because without education we can't be reading this in the first place. However, in our quest to attain greater heights and satisfy our ambitions, we tend to forgot God. In fact, we forget that our Christian life is also a learning process and each day God expects us to pass the tests of time and challenges that come our way as our exams to qualify us for an everlasting degree of glory after death.

Our only text book is the Bible, which God provided after long years of compilations to help us succeed in this world. But what do we see? We have occupied ourselves with things of this world that are temporary and have deserted God’s Word. Remember, the wisdom of God is the Word of God and Christ is that Word (John 1:1,14). All the temporary things in this world in which we have placed our trust have failed us in one way or the other: friends, family, work etc. It is therefore important that we rely on God’s Word to succeed. We must give the Word the deserved attention and importance in our lives and we will eat of its fruit. Joseph is a typical example of a man who relied totally on the wisdom of God and he was exalted from a prisoner to a prime minister overnight (Genesis 40). What can’t God's wisdom do for you?
