Got Milk?

Written by J. Raymond Pecoraro.

"Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up” (NKJV) James 4:7-10

In the world of advertisement, international products are presented & sold. The catchier the ad phraseology, the better the chance for the user to remember & hence the more sales will result. Ad agencies are a multi-billion dollar a year business. Make no mistake concerning this fact! For instance, one of the most efficient slogans ever is the California milk producers’ two-word question, “Got milk?” With this phrase, the dairy producers’ co-op captured the country’s attention. Billboards around the world began to popup with this question on it. This led to other money-making avenues such as T-shirts, coffee mugs, and the like with the phrase “Got Milk?” on it. This is nothing short of genius on the part of the ad agency that came up with this idea! Milk sales soared through the roof and prices rose along with it (supply & demand). In fact, since its inception, polls show that some 90% of the people recognized this slogan.

If the slogan “Got Milk?” is so great at reminding us to drink “cow juice,” perhaps we can come up with other two-word slogans that will enhance our ability & desire to live our lives to God’s glory! We can look no further that the Bible, particular the Book of James in the New Testament to seek such word slogans! These words will certainly remind us to live godly lives if we pay attention. Let us look at what God’s servant James has to say that would make good two-word slogans: “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil & he will flee from you. Draw near to God & He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; & purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament & mourn & weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning & your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, & He will lift you up.” (James 4:7-10). Let us dissect & see what James wants us to learn in these verses of Scripture: (Four specific guidelines):

1. Verse 7 tells us “to submit to God.” A slogan here would be “Got Submission?” Since God loves us so much, why not place our complete trust in Him? Our submission to our sovereign God helps us to resist the “evil one.”

2. Verse 8 lets us know the value of drawing nearer to God. The gap that may be between us & Him can only be spanned by our moving nearer to Him. God did not move away, we did! The slogan here could be “Got Nearer?”

3. Verse 8 reminds us that we must always cleanse our hearts of the impurities that sneak into it. We can do this through the wonderful avenue of repentance provided by God. The slogan here could be “Got Cleansed!”

4. Verse 10 reminds us to “humble ourselves before God.” Weeping over our sins will help us realize the need to eradicate them. The slogan here could be “Got Humbled?”

These slogans may not look as good on T-shirts or Billboards as “Got Milk?” but “Got Submission? Got Nearer?, Got Cleansed? & Got Humbled?” will carry you to heaven where the profits are unbelievable. Think on these things, if you will my friends! Milk is good for the body, but these other things are great for the soul! The most powerful epistle is that of a godly life whereby all can read. How about we advertise with this slogan: “Got God!”
