We Are Just Foreigners

“My days are like the evening shadow; I wither away like grass.” (NIV) Psalm 102:11

The death of another friend within one year got me thinking very deeply about life after death. As I mourn this friend, it also reminds me that we are all foreigners on the earth and a day will come when our maker will call us home. Will you be prepared?

Two distinct definitions are given for the word, foreigner. The first one states that a foreigner is somebody who comes from a country other than the country he currently resides. The second definition is somebody who does not feel or is not deemed to be part of a group. Both definitions suit us as Christians. The first definition reminds us that this world is not our home and that we have a home in heaven to go to some day. The second definition makes us aware as Christians that we cannot act or behave like people of this world do. If we recognize ourselves as foreigners, then what must we do?

The answer lies in this illustration. Imagine yourself out of your home country to another country to seek greener pastures. You work harder than when in your home country because you want to return home a better person than you left and to gain the respect of everyone at home when you return some day. You never lose focus of the reason you travelled and your only aim is to amass enough wealth to take back home. And when you have amassed enough wealth and the time comes to go back home, your joy knows no boundaries.

When we see ourselves as foreigners, we do not lose focus of the reason why we are on earth. Our quest to be Christ-like will be our focus each and every day, and when the day comes to meet our creator, we will be sure to be welcomed by Him into our heavenly home.

Our lives are like evening shadows and we wither away like grass. Our days on earth are numbered and each of us will die but do you have hope of eternal glory after death? Do not be deceived! There is surely life after death because Christ says so and you have the power with the help of Christ to decide if you want eternal suffering or eternal joy. The choice is yours. Repent and be baptized and continue in the teachings of His word (Acts 2:37-38) and when the trumpet sounds, you will surely be part of the roll when He calls out His own for eternal glory.
