The problem of pleasure - part 3

Written by Nana Kwame Owusu-Afriyie.

“Anything I wanted, I would take. I denied myself no pleasure. I even found great pleasure in hard work, a reward for all my labours. But as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all meaningless – like chasing the wind. There was nothing really worthwhile anywhere” (NLT) Ecclesiastes 2:9-11

Principle # 3: Any pleasure, however good, if not kept in balance will distort reality or destroy appetite.

The text on which this principle is premised is very blunt: “Do you like honey? Don’t eat too much, or it will make you sick!” (Proverbs 25:16, NLT).

We all can be very over indulgent in something we deem pleasurable, even the spiritual things. However we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that man is a trident being – spirit, soul, and body. Hence our lives should be kept in balance.

As Christians, it is highly recommendable that we are always present in the assembly of the saints (Hebrews 10:25). But we can’t be in church always! We come to church, worship God, and go out there to be a light to the world (Matthew 5:16). Even when it comes to serving God it should be kept in balance. I daresay the most difficult life to lead is a balanced life. Most of us struggle to juggle between the spiritual and the physical requirements of Christian living. We may be doing very well at work, but our spiritual life may be suffering. We may be excellent in school or in our career, but our family may be in tatters. Just as our bodies need a balanced diet to function properly, so do our lives.
