Who is on the Lord's side?

Written by Dede Abebreser Tsonyake.

“So he stood at the entrance to the camp and said, “whoever is for the Lord, come to me.” And all the Levites rallied to him” (NIV) Exodus 32:26

This reading reminds me of a song we use to sing back then in the children’s bible school class. It goes like this, “who is on the Lord’s side? Who will serve the King? Who will be His helpers, all that lives to bring? Who will leave the world’s side? Who will face the foe? Who is on the Lord’s side for he will go?” In Exodus 32, Moses returned from Mount Sinai where God gave him the two tablets of the testimony, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God, only to find the Israelites worshiping a golden calf Aaron had made for them using their gold jewelry. In order to maintain peace and order, Moses called for all those on the Lord’s side and the Levites were the only ones to rally to Moses.

The same thing is happening today. Jesus Christ is calling for everyone to come to Him but how many people rally to him? The Levites were just one tribe out of twelve tribes of Israel. They rallied to Moses when he called out for those on the Lord’s side. Are you part of the people who have accepted Christ invitation for salvation? It is true that the road that lead to salvation is narrow and few go that road but why can you not be part of that few?

After the Levites rallied to Moses, he ordered them go back and forth through the camp and slay all who are still worshiping the golden calf. About three thousand people died on that day. The call to be on the Lord’s side is life so why ignore life and seek death? The same will happen when Christ finally comes and those not on His side will be condemned to eternal suffering and those on His side, eternal joy.

Are you on the Lord’s side? Are you serving the King? Are you helping to bring more lives to Him? And have you left the world’s side?

Today, the call has come again, come to the one who gives life and gives it in abundance. All He seeks is a repentant soul who will allow for baptism and subject him/herself to His teachings. It is that simple. The word has come to you. Harden not your heart. The choice is yours to make but I encourage you to make the better choice; be on the Lord’s side!
