In my sorrow, I will sing His praise

Written by Dede Abebreser Tsonyake.

“give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.”(NIV) 1 Thessalonians 5:18

In life, everyone faces both good and bad circumstances. There are circumstances that bring us joy such as the birth of a new born baby and others that bring us sorrow as such the death of loved ones. Often, we are able to give thanks freely when we face the good ones but in bad circumstances we lack the motivation to give thanks.

My heart is filled with so much sorrow because I mourn for the death of my grandmother. Some weeks ago, I wrote about how the Lord restored her from the sick bed but the Lord in His perfect wisdom He has finally called her to glory. My heart is heavy but I will sing my Lord’s praise because I believe she is at a better place (His bosom). I can choose to dwell in my sorrow and meditate on how bad the circumstance is or I can choose to dwell on the goodness of the Lord and be thankful. I choose the latter.

Many at times, it is easy to give thanks when all is fine and well. However, when things are shaky and unwell, we tend to focus on all that is going wrong in our lives and overlook the numerous blessings the Lord bestowed on us. The year has been a challenging one but I must confess it has also come with lots of blessings than I can imagine. I can count so many great things that have happened to me this year and in these things and the Word of God (1 Thessalonians 5:18) I find the strength even in my sorrow to praise my God.

Today, if you read these few words of mine, and you are also filled with sorrow for your loss or bad circumstances in your life, I would encourage you to rather concentrate on the good things God has done in your life throughout the year and sing His praise. Give thanks in your sad moments for all things work together for the good of all who love the Lord (Romans 8:28). Hold on to the belief that in both happy and sad moments, things will work for your good. Join me sing the song, “count your blessings name them one by one”. God bless you!
